Today one thing is clear. This pandemic has tested and disciplined us as a human race.
For many of us, sitting at home amidst this ‘chaos’ has resulted in an endless chain of thoughts. Minute on minute, hour after hour and day after day we ponder on what to do, what new things to learn or even how to feel. But one thing is clear- we are thinking.
For most, our lives are built out of routine- we go to work every day (and even that is the same most of the time) then we go home to rest and recuperate for the next day. When the week is done, we go out to restaurants, malls, parties and events to entertain ourselves and spend time with loved ones. As such we do not often realise that in the midst of all the work, the busyness and the weekly routine, we do not exercise our most valuable organ- the mind.
And why is this important?
There is an endless flow of information on the current state of affairs worldwide, including various facts and theories on the now as well as the future. Naturally, it is our thoughts that bring about any positive or negative emotions as response to the information we consume. It is our thoughts that lead us to anxiety, panic and fear OR to enthusiasm and excitement. And it is our thoughts that power us through each day or give us a sense of helplessness.
It is more evident now that… It is indeed all in the mind.
The mind is a powerful muscle. But like any other muscle, it is important to observe the way it functions, to exercise it accordingly and to train or teach it how to function and how to respond to specific circumstances. Though this may not seem like a critical exercise, it is in times of disarray that this learning becomes fruitful, as we are each brought to come into our minds. At the end of the day, a stable and conscious mind set is necessary to move us from one day to the next. In this time, our mind is the most tested of our capacities.
So what do we do now?
Though most of us choose to depend on external stimuli to keep our minds calm and at ease (such as alcohol, exercise, food, etc.), it is important to train the mind to re-calibrate itself independently of such stimuli. The status quo demands that we ask ourselves a series of significant questions…
How conscious is your mind of the full spectrum of your current situation?
How trained is it to interpret your current state with an objective to provide a positive outcome or solution?
How frequently do you exercise your mind to function at various levels- to observe thoughts, select specific thoughts and respond to only what it consciously chooses to respond to?
What is your level of awareness of your own thought processes?
The above questions bring us to an important subject, managing your mind set.
The way I see it, there will be three (3) types of people post this pandemic:
1. Those that are elevated above where they are now to a better state of being- a different perspective, a higher level of awareness, a defined structure of life and a planned existence.
2. Those that will be left the same way as they are now- with the same minds, same perceptions, and the same way of being- only a month or so later.
3. Those that will be left worse than their current state- struggling through the chaos day after day, sinking into conspiracy theories, absorbing all the negative media in order to point blame, and waiting for it to all come to an end- and thus missing out on the transformation that can come out of this pandemic.
All that marks the difference between the 3 individuals is mind set.
So, the real question is, which one will YOU be?
This is evolution. It is time to create a new normal.
