The world as we know it has changed. That much we have accepted.
In the last weeks there has been less and less selfies but more and more posts, videos, images and memes about this pandemic. Most of these are meant to bring hope for the future and some are meant to give a lighter perspective on this 'new way of life'. With all the above, I believe each of us has had to truly evaluate for ourselves what this epidemic means for us- for our jobs or careers, for our families and homes, for our lives and our future.
I watched a video by William Suchemba last night that threw me onto a chain of thoughts on this epidemic with respect to time and life in general. In pondering on this subject for half the night, tossing through fear, anxiety, excitement and relief, I realised that what has come out of this the most is that we are each brought to account. Not only for the times we spent out in the world and not within ourselves but for our time here on earth. I recognised that we are not only called to stay inside our homes, but inside ourselves. And whether you account to God or a Source or a Higher Power or just to yourself, how would you justify your existence on earth? And the years you have lived? How would you vindicate yourself to your future generations?
Consider this.
Death is no question. The question as I gathered last night is,… if you had to ask for more years of life now, how many years would you ask for? And most importantly, why should those be granted to you? How different will you be, and in what areas? WHO will you be? What change will you bring to yourself and to others?
The true question is…
What impact will you have that warrants you more years on this earth? What purpose will you serve?
Here is another point to consider.
Shakespeare said 'All the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players: they have their exits and their entrances; and one man in his time plays many parts, his acts being seven ages.’
If we consider the world a stage and our lives as part of a play or a story, then who or what is your character? What role does he or she play in the story? What is her overall impact on the story line? Does the story change because he or she is a part of it? Or is he or she an extra- a part that can be played by anyone else?
With introspection, we come to realise that we are not meant to live as extras in the story of the world. That our lives alone are 'kept' in order to play a definite part in the story, a part without which the story will not be what it is meant to be.
The challenge that now lies ahead of each of us is to find out whom our character is and what role he or she is meant to play. It is to define our purpose and begin the journey of doing what it is we are ‘put on this stage’ to do. It is to live efficiently and effectively. To not waste and deplete our internal and external resources unnecessarily, particularly the resource that is time. A resource that we know once given and has passed, cannot be brought back. A resource that cannot be multiplied or expanded. A fleeting BUT powerful resource. That if used wisely and purposely, there would not be a need for too much of it.
How will you use yours? And what will you do?
For there will come a day that you will not have it to use or even to waste. Will you live a life of purpose?
This is the new world order. It is time.
